While there is no sign yet of the long-anticipated sequel to the Mortal Kombat films of the 1990s, based on the classic martial arts fantasy video game, a 10-episode web series is reportedly on the way.

The upcoming series is not inspired by the 1995 film starring Christopher Lambert and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson nor by the Mortal Kombat television series of 1998.

According to horror news site, the webisodes will be adapted from a short film, Mortal Kombat: Rebirth, last year's viral hit by Kevin Tancharoen, who will also direct the online series.

Actor Michael Jai White reprises his role as Jax from the Rebirth short.

The script by Todd and Aaron Helbing, who co-wrote the television series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, follows the tale of warriors battling dueling gods. Production is scheduled for February in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Also going online with a web series is Keifer Sutherland with The Confession, a new action show in which the actor best known for his role as a government agent in the hit series 24 plays a hitman who confides about his victims to a priest, portrayed by John Hurt.

Sutherland is executive-producing the series, which premieres on (US-only) in March in five- to seven-minute episodes.
