TWENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD Lee Tze Yuan could be Singapore's very own big action star.

Actor and martial artist Jet Li

He was among more than 100 people who kicked and punched their way through the International New Era Chinese Kungfu Competition, a martial arts competition organised by Hong Kong television station TVB to talent-scout the next action stars in the mould of Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh. Lee won the Singapore leg of the competition.

'I think what sets me apart is that I practise Taiji, a form of martial arts that one does not immediately associate with young people like myself,' said Lee.

A national wushu champion who came in sixth two years ago in the World Wushu Championships for Taiji Jian, Lee has been practising martial arts since he was 14.

The contestants were tested not only on their martial arts performance, but on acting skills as well. That is the area Lee will work on to prepare for the finals, as he felt he did not perform very well for that segment.

The tournament will also be held in countries like Malaysia and the United States. The winners of each leg will compete in the grand finals in Hong Kong later this year.
